Sheila is a graduate of Stellar Career College –Modesto and earned a certificate in Veterinary Assisting.
What was your educational/employment background prior to enrolling at Stellar? I was taking general education classes at MJC right after high school. I wanted a change in my education and my career goal. I have been working in retail for about 5 years; it was definitely time for a change.
Why did you choose Stellar to continue your education?
I have only had experience with MJC, but I saw a difference with Stellar. I am glad I made the choice of enrolling because its education and training for a specific career. This was exactly what I was looking for.
Tell us about your Stellar College experience.
Everyone here was so nice, helpful and goal oriented. My instructor was the best; she taught me everything I needed to be ready for a clinic. Administration was also super helpful and they want their students to succeed to the very top. Without there constant support I would not know that to do at times. They were there to listen not just about college issues but also things going on outside of school. I cannot thank them enough for this opportunity and I am forever grateful.
What did you learn about yourself as a student?
As a student, I learned about patience. Although I do not like to waste time and want everything done perfectly, I know that is not the case and I know practice takes time. I am still learning and that is ok.
What specific skills did you gain during your experience with Stellar Career College?
Everything there is to know about veterinary assisting. Specifically what helped was the hands-on portion of the course. Without hands-on, we as students would be clueless at the clinic.
What was your most memorable or favorite part about attending Stellar?
My favorite part was working with the cats/kittens the instructor would bring to class because I knew it was going to be a day where we would get to practice our skills we were taught. We received a lot of support from our instructor, but I liked that were able to do a lot of it on our own.
If you were starting your education all over again, what would you do differently?
I would definitely consider all the open options whether it be junior college, trade school, university, etc. IF I had known about a school like Stellar, without a doubt I would enroll. Most people are used to a college or university option, but schools like Stellar are not talked about much and it should.
What was your biggest challenge you faced in your life as a student? In addition, how did you overcome the challenge?
My biggest challenge would be time and motivation. Specifically at MJC, it was tough because I felt like it was taking too long to finish and I felt like I was not going anywhere with all the classes I needed. I knew I was going to change my major eventually and I did my research and luckily, I found Stellar!
What are your goals for the future?
My goals for the future is put my skills to the test whether it be on my own or with help, improve my skills more and hope for the best. Right now my main focus is assisting, but as time passes, I will see if I reach for RVT. I am just glad I get to do something I enjoy.
